Oval Gear vs. Helical Rotor Flow Meters: Which One Fits Your Media?

Choosing the right positive displacement (PD) flow meter isn't just about accuracy on paper — it's about matching the meter to what's actually flowing through your pipeline. NK Instruments Pvt. Ltd. manufactures both Oval Gear and Helical Rotor Flow Meters, and getting this choice wrong on a contaminated or particulate-laden line is one of the most common causes of unplanned flow meter failure.

⚙️ Oval Gear Flow Meter
A precision PD meter built around two closely intermeshed oval-shaped gears. As fluid pushes the gears to rotate, each rotation traps and releases a precisely known “pocket” of liquid — which is what makes oval gear meters so accurate for viscous fluids like fuel, oil, and lubricants.
 Available in:
  • Mechanical Dial version (oil/fuel applications)
  • Standard threaded-end version
  • Flange Connection version
  • F-Thread version with 24V DC supply
  • Battery-operated Display version
Best suited for: clean, viscous, non-abrasive liquids where tight measurement tolerance is the priority — hydraulic oils, diesel, syrups, resins, and similar media.

⚠️ The catch: Because oval gear meters rely on very tight clearances between the gears and housing to maintain accuracy, industry guidance is consistent across manufacturers — fluids with solid particles or debris are a known limitation, and upstream strainers are considered standard practice to protect the gears from jamming or wear. Skipping filtration is widely cited as the single most common cause of oval gear meter failure in the field.

 🔧 Helical Rotor Flow Meter
A more rugged PD design using two counter-rotating helical rotors instead of meshed gears — sometimes called a “bi-rotor” or “helical gear” meter. The rotors form the same kind of sealed measuring chamber as an oval gear meter, but the open helical profile handles flow more smoothly, with less pulsation and lower pressure drop.

Available in:
  • Flange end connection version
  • M Threaded end connection version
Best suited for: higher-viscosity or less-than-perfectly-clean media where some particulate content is expected. This design is specifically recognized in the flow measurement industry for offering enhanced particle tolerance compared to traditional gear-type PD meters, alongside reduced maintenance and smoother, pulsation-free flow.

🎯 Bottom Line If your process fluid is clean, the Oval Gear Flow Meter gives you excellent accuracy and the widest range of connection/display variants. If your media carries floating particles, sediment, or minor debris, the Helical Rotor Flow Meter is the more reliable, lower-maintenance choice — without the added cost and pressure drop of an inline strainer.
