Ultrasonic or Radar Level Transmitters: Which One Fits Your Tank?

Both Ultrasonic and Radar Level Transmitters give you continuous, non-contact level measurement — but they don't perform the same way in every tank. NK Instruments Pvt. 🔊 Ultrasonic Level Transmitter

Ultrasonic transmitters measure level by emitting sound pulses toward the material's surface and timing the echo that bounces back. Because the sensor never touches the process material, it works equally well on liquids and solids, and is unaffected by the electrical properties of the medium being measured.

Available as:

        Non-Contact (Free-Space) Ultrasonic Level Transmitter

        Self-adjusting tracking Ultrasonic with programmable or simple push-button calibration

        4–20 mA output, with optional RS-485 (Modbus RTU) for PLC-based diagnostics and data logging

Best suited for:

        Clean tanks, reservoirs, and open channels with stable conditions

        Applications where the medium's dielectric properties are unknown or highly variable

        Cost-effective continuous level monitoring for straightforward liquids and bulk solids

⚠️ Where it struggles:  Sound waves can be scattered or absorbed by dust, heavy vapor, foam, and turbulent surfaces — and the speed of sound itself changes with air temperature, which can affect accuracy if the vessel isn't thermally stable.

 

📡 Radar Level Transmitter

Radar transmitters use microwave energy instead of sound, timing the reflected wave off the material's surface. Because electromagnetic waves travel largely unaffected by air temperature, pressure, dust, and vapor, radar tends to hold its accuracy in conditions where ultrasonic signals degrade.

        Insertion Probe (Guided-Wave) Radar Level Transmitter

        Self-adjusting tracking radar with programmable or simple push-button calibration

Best suited for:

        Tanks and silos with dust, vapor, or foam present

        High-temperature or high-pressure vessels where thermal stability can't be guaranteed

        Tanks where agitator or, any motor is present, regardless of noise being present in that application.

        Tanks having agitator – as we can program the Radar Level Transmitter to neglect the paddle of the agitator during its rotations.

        Kilns, dams, and process vessels handling liquids with fumes

⚠️ Where it struggles:  Radar performance depends on the target material's dielectric constant. Very low-dielectric materials (dry powders, certain plastic pellets, low-moisture granules) reflect less energy back to the sensor, which can make level detection more difficult without guided-wave or specialised antenna configurations.
